Persian Tabbies are not a very needy breed of cat. Real-life Persian Tabbies are also just as selective of who they get their affections from. Garfield only preferred the affections of his owner Jon, and the occasional visitor that he had become familiar with over the years of the comic. Persian Tabbies also have a more selective personality. Much like Garfield, the Persian Tabby is a laid back, lovable cat who loves to just lay around and be shown affection to by their human. Garfield may not have been considered to be a “sweet” cat, personality-wise, but his breed is typically known for their sweet, friendly, and docile personalities. Garfield as well as Nermal were both considered to be “Mackerel” tabby Persians, judging by their fur patterns. The most well-known feature of a Tabby cat is the “M” shaped marking of the fur of their forehead. The “Tabby” Persian cat is just a name that denotes the color pattern of their fur. This is where hybrid variations of the Persian cat, as well as the Tabby Persian began its lineage. The real story behind the Tabby Persian, however, is a long time of experimentation on creating such a gorgeous breed of cat with their short yet large body frame, fluffy tail, and cute, squishy face.īack in the late 19th century, purebred Persians were often being bred with other majestic breeds of cat that were known to live in the areas of Turkey and Afghanistan, also known as Asiatic cats. Some stories say that “Wizards” are responsible for the birth of this beautiful breed of cat.
PERSIAN TABBY CAT SKIN
Like other longhaired cats, Persians are the most likely to develop fungal skin infections, such as ringworm. The Tabby Persian is a nature-loving feline that has roots in Iran, leading back into the 1920s. Persian cats may also have an increased incidence of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (thickening of the walls of the heart). Using screening, breeders are now working to try to eradicate the problem – always ask the breeder to show the PKD certificates for the cats used to produce your kitten. This condition was found in more than a third of all Persian and Exotic shorthaired cats in the 1990s when screening tests became available. Persians can carry a gene that leads to kidney failure (called autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease) through the development of cysts in the kidney.

The flat nature of face also increases the chances of eye disease. The tear ducts may not follow their natural path and so the eyes run and wet the face constantly – this can lead to skin rashes and sores on the face. Small nostrils and a soft palate which is too long can also lead to severe breathing problems. Because the head shape has been shortened and the face flattened, there can be jaw deformities which can lead to dental disease and potential problems with eating and drinking. While the Persian Longhair cat may be expected to live for about ten to twelve years, it is a breed that is recognised as having a number of health problems. Cats from these blended lines were imported to Europe in the 1600s. This breed requires daily brushing and occasional baths and should strictly be an indoor pet.ĭID YOU KNOW? Though the origin of the Persian is not known definitely, the breed is believed to have come from Angora cats from Turkey crossed with other longhair cats from Persia, Afghanistan, Burma, China, and Russia. The Persian Tabby, known for being extroverted and fun, comes in three patterns, classic, mackerel and patched. The dilute calico is patched with blue and cream, and chocolate and lilac calicos have patches of chocolate and red or lilac and cream, respectively. The Persian Calico has a white coat splashed with vivid patches of red and black. All have brilliant copper eyes, except the silver tabby with white, which may have green or hazel eyes. The Persian Bicolour features a combination of colours as well as patterns of tabby. All have brilliant copper eyes, except the pristine white solid colour, which may be copper, deep blue or a combination of blue and copper. The Persian Solid may be coloured white, blue, black, red, cream, chocolate, and lilac. The breed features solid, bicolour, calico and tabby varieties, which include a multitude of colours and patterns. With her sweet personality, the Persian is a charming pet for all ages.
